Sun Damage & Our Skin
The images below illustrate the effects of sun damage in the skin which are undetectable to the naked eye. The woods lamp highlights skin damage in the deeper layers so that we can take action early. Hyperpigmentation is the extreme freckling you can see here, also known as sundamage. Using the right products regularly can reduce and in some cases prevent premature ageing.
What can I do?
Products that contain active ingredients and vitamin rich oils literally feed the skin and provide us with nourishment and antioxidant protection. Stimulating new collagen and rejuvenation is pararmount for youthful skin and the right combination of ingredients in our skicare products has a vital role to play.
If we apply the right nutrients to our skin, we can help slow the ageing process and in some cases reverse damage and smooth wrinkles.
Did you know?
Regular use of sunbeds increases the risk of skin cancer (melanoma) by 3 times.
Sunbeds emit 12 x the UVA radiation than that of the sun. This not only fast tracks your skin to ageing, it greatly increases the risk of developing melanoma.
In the winter snow and ice, UV rays can reflect back causing double the damage. The sun also reflects off water.
Between 50-80% of UV rays still pass through the clouds on an overcast day. This is why we must apply antioxidants to our skin everyday.
Free Radicals to put it simply, are molecules that when produced in excess, damage the cells in our bodies. They can compromise our DNA and break down collagen in the skin.
Over-sun exposure, pollution, bad diet and high stress levels all increase free radical attack. In order to fight this, it is important we have a vitamin rich diet, as well effective skin care products. Antioxidants such as A C and E neutralise free radicals and help prevent damage from occurring.
We all need the sun in order to survive and we know it stimulates vitamin D which is vital for bone health. There are countless benefits to mention, but if we damage our skin this can fast track premature ageing and skin cancer.
The diagram below demonstrates UVA and UVB rays penetrating our skin. UVA rays have a longer wavelength therefore reaching the deeper layers. All Freer Skincare products contain vitamin rich oils, antioxidants and extracts known to stimulate new collagen and help reduce the effects of sun damage.
